Pectoral augmentation is a surgical procedure done to create a more masculine appearance in the chest area. Through the use of pec implants the chest is built up to achieve definition and a sturdier pectoral region.

In order to undergo any surgical procedure, you must be in overall good health. If you smoke, you must stop at least two weeks prior to your pectoral implantation surgery. You will also need to remain smoke free in the weeks following your surgery as tobacco use can hinder the body’s natural healing process.

Ideal candidates for pectoral augmentation are men who have an undeveloped chest and can’t seem to achieve any definition no matter how much they work out or how healthy they eat. Additionally, men with sunken chests or absent pectoral muscles due to Poland Syndrome (a birth defect characterized by the undevelopment or complete lack of chest muscles) may greatly benefit from this surgery.

When you meet your surgeon for an initial consultation it’s important to disclose your medical history so that they can make an informed decision about your candidacy.

The only recognized body of plastic surgeons in Canada is the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Each member of CSAPS must be certified in the specialty of cosmetic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. CSAPS surgeons must adhere to a strict ethical code and standards in order to continue to practice in the country. When selecting a surgeon to perform your pectoral implantation procedure make sure to find someone who is not only board-certified but someone you trust. Experience is also a key factor in finding a plastic surgeon. Below you’ll find three questions to ask potential surgeons to help you see if they’re a good fit:

Where did you complete your surgical training?

How many pectoral implant procedures have you done?

How long have you been in practice?

What does the recovery process for pectoral implants involve?

You will need to rest immediately following your surgery. You will be given painkillers and antibiotics (if needed) to help you deal with any discomfort you may experience. The area will be tender and sore in the first few days following your procedure and it’s important that you sleep on your back until the soreness and swelling subsides. Some people are able to return to work after a week while others choose to take longer before going back to their job. If you work in an office setting you will probably be able to get back to work quickly. However, if your job involves heavy lifting or you have to be on your feet all day, you may need to spend extra time at home resting to ensure that you’re physically able to do your work. In terms of exercise, you will be able to resume lower body workouts after about two weeks. In four weeks you can start with light upper body exercises and approximately six weeks you can begin doing full body workouts again.

In the first weeks following your pectoral implant procedure, you will be required to wear a compression garment. This garment is worn to promote healing and is easily hidden under clothing. Moreover, your surgeon will give you a detailed list of aftercare instructions that involve wound cleaning. Make sure that you understand these instructions before your surgery so you can enjoy a speedy and full recovery.

Prior to the surgery, you will be given anesthesia for your comfort. Then your surgeon will make an incision that reaches from hipbone to hipbone above the pubic areas. Don’t worry, these incisions are done in that area so they can be concealed by underwear and bathing suits. Once the incisions are made, your surgeon will excise skin and fat from the abdomen and tighten the underlying muscles. Liposuction may be used as well and in some cases, it may be enough to remove the excess skin and fat from the abdomen.

Many people combine a tummy tuck with arm and thigh lifts, butt lifts, breast lifts and other body sculpting procedures. Many surgeons offer Mommy Makeovers which involve multiple body shaping surgeries that women who have given birth would benefit from.

You can give birth following a tummy tuck but you must wait at least a year. Generally, abdominoplasty is performed on women who aren’t planning on having any more children. You must also have lost most of the baby weight before getting a tummy tuck.

There is no gender limit for abdominoplasty. Men who have undergone bariatric surgery or have lost a significant amount of weight can have an abdominoplasty to remove the excess skin from the area. Furthermore, men who have loose skin around the abdomen caused by genetics can also have this surgery.

You will lose some weight after the procedure because excess skin and tissue will be removed from the abdomen but a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. The results of a tummy tuck are permanent but you will need to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle following your surgery.
